Before data reaches any analytics system, it is captured at the source: timing transponders, camera-based photo-finish systems, stewards’ enquiry records, and declaration management systems at the regulator level. Understanding how data originates helps assess its reliability and know where limitations might appear.

Timing Technology

Modern racecourses use transponder-based timing systems embedded in saddle cloths or girth straps, combined with fixed detection loops at each furlong interval. This produces the sectional time data that has become the standard for pace analysis. The HKJC has operated this technology since 2008; UK courses have been progressively adopting it since 2015, with broad coverage across QIPCO-sponsored flat racing events.

Photo Finish and Margin Data

Winning margins and finishing positions are determined by photo-finish camera systems and recorded to the nearest unit (head, neck, short head, length, etc.). Our dataset normalises these into numeric half-length values for quantitative analysis — “neck” becomes 0.25 lengths, “short head” becomes 0.05, and so on — while preserving the original textual description as a secondary field.

Declaration and Results Management

Race entries and declarations flow through the regulatory authority’s own management systems before being published. The HKJC publishes final declarations for each race meeting day several hours before racing. UK declarations are managed through the BHA (British Horseracing Authority) and Weatherbys, with final declarations available 24 hours before each meeting.
